The dedicated employees at wealth manager Brewin Dolphin’s Birmingham and Oxford offices were not going to let the Covid-19 pandemic deter them from raising much-needed funds for Birmingham cancer support charity Help Harry Help Others when they came up with their ‘around the world in 80 days’ virtual challenge to collectively walk, run, cycle or ride 25,000 miles, equivalent to the circumference of the earth, in just 80 days.
Every member from the offices took part in the challenge, creating a positive competitive spirit to see who could travel the furthest, with that honour going to Birmingham-based investment manager, Gordie Houston, who covered an impressive 2,189 miles (the equivalent of Birmingham to Ankara in Turkey). The team’s combined efforts saw them raise £8,500 for Help Harry Help Others at a time when charities are struggling to raise money due to the impact of coronavirus on their fundraising activities. Those who took part included a team member who walked whilst heavily pregnant to a temporary member of staff who was so committed that he continued with the challenge even after leaving.
Earlier this year, Brewin Dolphin’s Birmingham and Oxford offices chose Help Harry Help Others as their charity of the year and will continue to support it with various initiatives. The charity offers support and guidance to those coping with cancer, and was created in memory of Harry Moseley, a young boy who sadly lost his life to a brain tumour in 2011. Menna Cule, head of office for Brewin Dolphin Birmingham and Oxford, said: “I’m so very proud of the team. This has been fantastic in a number of ways, it has not only served to support the charity during an extraordinary time by raising much needed funds, but it has helped us too in having a common cause to rally together for and work towards as a team.”
TV presenter and patron of Help Harry Help Others, Ben Shephard said: “Congratulations to the Brewin Dolphin Birmingham and Oxford offices on completion of their around the world in 80 days challenge to raise funds for Help Harry Help Others. This is a very special charity which is close to my heart and the money raised will make a huge difference.”
