Ready to turn your passion project into a sustainable start-up? Strengthen business and entrepreneurial skills and deepen your social impact with Start Up Plus, the free programme from the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE). www.the-sse.org/start-up-plus
Wealth management company Brewin Dolphin is partnering with the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) to deliver Start Up Plus, a free learning programme to support people to strengthen their social enterprise (an organisation that is making a positive difference to the community and people’s lives) into innovative and robust businesses.
Brewin Dolphin will work with SSE schools in the South East, South West, Yorkshire and the North East, and Scotland to attract social entrepreneurs from around the UK. The aim of the Start Up Plus programme is to find and support 15 social entrepreneurs from across the UK, who will embark on a seven-month action-based learning programme to develop their entrepreneurial skills and learn how to build stronger trading skills to achieve lasting impact. They will learn first-hand from inspiring social entrepreneurs and experts about what it takes to manage and grow their organisation.
Brewin Dolphin employees from many of its 33 regional offices will be involved throughout the programme by offering the 15 participants their expertise and insights through mentoring and networking sessions.
Rosie Richardson-Aitken, corporate responsibility manager, Brewin Dolphin, said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with the School for Social Entrepreneurs’ Start Up Plus programme to find the social change makers of the future. The purpose and aspirations of the SSE aligns closely with Brewin Dolphin’s own company values of being genuine, expert and ambitious in all that we do, and so we believe that by working with the SSE to nurture these budding entrepreneurs, who will combine their commercial acumen with a social cause, we can help to effect positive change in our local communities and in wider society.”
Tom Barratt, director of development and external affairs, the School for Social Entrepreneurs said: “SSE is happy to announce its partnership with wealth management company Brewin Dolphin. The Start Up Plus programme will support social entrepreneurs at crucial stages of their start-up, assisting with everything from branding to financial management and recruitment.
“SSE has over 20 years of experience in helping social entrepreneurs to build upon their skills, networks and know-how to grow their organisations from strength to strength. We are excited to be leaning upon our own experience, whilst working alongside Brewin Dolphin in the delivery of this programme, and look forward to utilising the expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm of Brewin Dolphin’s staff to the benefit of programme participants.
SSE helps 1,000 people a year to develop the skills, strengths and networks they need to tackle society’s biggest problems. It runs courses that equip people to start, scale and strengthen organisations that make a positive difference, with everything from practical and engaging learning to mentoring and help with funding.
The range of social enterprises is diverse, covering issues such as the stigma of suicide in certain communities and putting measures in place to prevent it, to initiatives focusing on reducing poverty and unemployment, enhancing conservation, the use of music as therapy, and tackling gambling addiction.
SSE has been instrumental in helping people to turn their social enterprise vision into a reality. Examples of social entrepreneurs who have honed their craft at SSE’s national schools and have gone on to successfully launch a social enterprise include:
South East: Frankie Graham founded BetKnowMore UK, a gambling support and training service that addresses problematic issues caused by gambling.
South West: Chukumeka Maxwell founded Action to Prevent Suicide, which provides support, training and promotes collaboration to help support individuals and communities at risk of suicide.
North East: Karl Stabler founded Conservation Management Services (CMS), which through wildlife conservation and grounds maintenance helps people find employment, learn new skills and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.
Scotland: Annette Tonner founded Community Focus Scotland CIC, which focuses on reducing poverty and unemployment through a food larder service, and also by providing industry training and qualifications to enable people to take themselves out of food poverty.
