26 April 2017

The first cycling event in the Brewin Dolphin Velo Series, in conjunction with UK Cycling Events, took place on Saturday 22 April in Oxfordshire. The sold-out sportive event saw 1,600 riders, of varying cycling ability, depart from Kassam Stadium, home of Oxford United FC, and undertake the challenging Ridgeway Rouleur course.
The Ridgeway is Britain’s oldest road, and the course offers the best of Oxfordshire’s stunning rolling countryside, passing through picturesque villages and scenic terrain. The course catered for seasoned as well as fledgling cyclists with a choice of 34 mile, 52 mile or 87 mile routes.
A highlight of the day was the participation of seven-time Paralympic gold medallist Jody Cundy OBE, who had received his honour from the Queen the week before, and former British cycling champion Dean Downing. Both took to the road alongside Brewin Dolphin Velo Club cyclists before then giving a candid interview about their cycling careers.
With the success of the first Brewin Dolphin Velo Series in Oxfordshire, participants are now looking forward to the next three sportive events in the cycling series (The Peaks Tour, Derbyshire on 14 May; Ochil Hills, Fife on 3 June; and the New Forest Summer on 1 July).
Stephen Jones, co-head of private clients at Brewin Dolphin and keen cyclist said: “We have witnessed a huge surge in participation in cycling over the last few years and many Brewin colleagues are active participants in the sport. It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic riders brave an early start and I am thrilled by the response we had to our first Velo Club sportive.
‘We were also delighted to welcome UK cycling champions Jody Cundy OBE and Dean Downing, who rode with and supported many riders on the day, and also provided a unique insight into their successful cycling careers.”
