On 5 August 2013 Olivia Perkin’s world came crashing down. Her elder brother, Daniel, then 24 years-old, committed suicide. There had been no warning signs and no explanation.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of Daniel’s death and in remembrance of him, Olivia, who is an administrator at wealth management firm RBC Brewin Dolphin’s Leeds office, will organise and take part in ten charitable acts across the year.
All funds raised will go to Andy’s Man Club, a small charity described as ‘a talking group, a place for men to come together in a safe environment to talk about issues and problems they have faced or are currently facing’. The Leeds office has also made Andy’s Man Club its charity of the year.
Among the fundraising activities that Olivia and her family and friends will organise and participate in this year include a 10k race, 10-mile bike ride, a football tournament, food donations to the homeless, a blood donation, an auction and a charity gala dinner in Leeds, themed ‘Dan’s Decade’, to mark the anniversary in August.
Olivia Perkin, administrator at RBC Brewin Dolphin’s Leeds office, said: “Dan was the happiest, kindest and funniest person I’ve ever met. No one had any clue he was sad, or depressed, he spoke to no one. I often worry that Dan felt he had no one to turn to and I truly wish there was a charity like Andy’s Man Club around at the time of his death to give him the support he needed.”

Oliver Vikse, project development champion at Andy’s Man Club, said: “Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under the age of 50 in the UK. Over 4,500 men take their lives in the UK every single year. It’s imperative that we reduce these numbers. We believe that providing a safe space where men can come together and talk to other like-minded men about anything they might be struggling with, in a non-judgmental, confidential environment can prevent them from reaching that crisis point.”
Richard Annis, head of RBC Brewin Dolphin’s Leeds office, added: “We are so proud of everything that Olivia is undertaking to honour the memory of Daniel and to raise awareness of such an important issue that so many find difficult to talk about. We will be doing all we can to support Andy’s Man Club, and Olivia and her family throughout the year as they take on these fundraising activities.”
