Brexit and the rural economy

In this week’s podcast we discuss the rural economy, its vital contribution to the country and broader GDP and the potential impact of Brexit. Our guest Charles Trotman is an economist working for the CLA which represents countryside landowners and businesses. Brewin Dolphin’s Head of Research, Guy Foster asks how reliant the UK is on food imports and what causes that dependency. We then ask what impact Brexit will have on the agricultural market and how dependent it will be on the evolving deal. What would happen if no deal were reached? Would Britain’s best option be to declare unilateral free trade (as some have argued)?
