Today saw wealth manager, Brewin Dolphin, present the very first show garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show based on a brownfield site – demonstrating how a former 1900s industrial area can be transformed with the tenets of sustainability at its heart. <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dressed in outfits created from sustainable fabric and upcycled materials, Kate Garvie, her daughter Ruby Garvie, along with violinist Sally Potterton, pose on the Brewin Dolphin garden<\/a> designed by Paul Hervey-Brookes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A floral crown was passed down from mother to daughter, symbolising how something inherited can blossom to become even more valuable for the next generation through careful custodianship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden was designed for a couple on an imaginary industrial brownfield site that was already defined by the fabric of pre-existing buildings. With thousands of new homes set to be built on brownfield sites over the coming years the garden reflects the challenge of inheriting poor soil conditions that many British homeowners will face. Demonstrating how it is possible to rehabilitate such a plot in a creative way using repurposed and existing materials, it features an underground fridge (similar in principle to the old ice houses), large reclaimed metal cogs laid flat for dramatic paving, and some beautiful old terracotta pots from Puglia originally used to preserve pickles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It showcases a range of plants which actively restore polluted soil \u2013 the type of conditions which are found in many urban environments \u2013 and use plants which absorb CO2<\/sub> at higher rates to improve air quality. The garden shows how, through careful guardianship, it is possible to transform contaminated land and leave it in a healthier, more sustainable condition for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Hervey-Brookes, says,<\/b> \u201cThis Brewin Dolphin Garden is a metaphor for prudent stewardship and custodianship. I wanted to illustrate that no matter the type of space we might inherit \u2013 even the most challenging of urban settings, where topsoil is removed or contaminated by heavy irons – it is possible, through the selection of appropriate plants to rehabilitate any area, creating a garden of beauty and leave it thriving for future generations to enjoy.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The planting is based upon a mix of native pioneer species alongside endemic plants which rehabilitate soils (such as Raspberry, Pendulous Sedge, Anthriscus and Angelica) and clean the air through higher rate CO2<\/sub> absorption. Garden-worthy shrubs and perennials, which do not require a lot of maintenance or are in flower for long periods of time, add nectar banks and habitat potential for pollinating bees and other insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A range of repurposed materials can be observed, such as reclaimed and sustainably sourced bricks, Welsh slate paving made from reclaimed slag, and pre-treated straw walls. A pool, edged in the Welsh slate, collects water and alleviates the risk of flooding from high volume rainfall events, which are increasingly common with the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a small, dedicated space in the garden for edibles, with a variety of fruits, herbs and vegetables, in which edibles that tend to be more expensive to produce and therefore purchase (such as gooseberries and raspberries) have been chosen to demonstrate the idea of the \u2018best use of space in an urban setting\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
