  1762

  John Dawes is among stockbrokers who form a club at Jonathan's to buy and sell shares. It is the beginnings of the London Stock Exchange. His business would eventually become Brewin Dolphin.

  1773

  The brokers erect their own building in Sweeting's Alley. It is known as New Jonathan's but soon changes its name to The Stock Exchange. The Exchange moves to Capel Court in 1802.

  1788

  The Gentleman's Magazine reports that John Dawes, whose firm would eventually become Brewin Dolphin, has died at the Stock Exchange Coffee House, having been in a "dropsical habit" for some time.

  1820

  Jonathan Christie takes part in a duel on behalf of his friend John Lockhart. His opponent is killed despite his attempts to save the man's life. His son, Alexander, founded Christie & Brewin in 1865.

  1846

  Railway mania comes to an abrupt end when shares in the emerging sector collapse in an event reminiscent of the dot-com boom. Such calamities made the case for expert advice and modern investment strategies.

  1890

  The first telephone is installed at the London offices of Christie & Brewin, where there are few other modern amenities. Partners rely on candles for light and a coal fire for warmth.

  1914

  The London Stock Exchange closes from the end of July until the New Year following the outbreak of war. In World War Two it would only close for seven days, one because of damage from a V2 rocket.

  1915

  With a lack of male staff, Christie & Brewin hires its first female employee. It is not until 1973, however, that the first women become members of the Stock Exchange.

  1973

  A change in the London Stock Exchange rules allows Brewin Dolphin to cement its relationship with clients in the Channel Islands by opening a branch in Jersey.

• 

  1997

  The acquisition of Newcastle-based Wise Speke brings with it a research capability. It forms the basis of today's 30-strong department, which daily puts investment opportunities under the microscope.

  2001

  Dame Clara Furse becomes the first woman Chief Executive of the London Stock Exchange. She would rejuvenate the Exchange and see off several hostile takeover bids.

  2009

  British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes raises money for Marie Curie Cancer Care by becoming the first British pensioner to reach the summit of Everest, in a Brewin Dolphin-sponsored event.

  2011

  As technology rapidly evolves, Brewin Dolphin launches its first app for the Apple iPad, using content from its client magazine, Perspective.

• 

  2011

  Brewin Dolphin makes its first foray into Ireland with the acquisition of Tilman Asset Management in Dublin.

• 

  2012

  Brewin Dolphin is the new sponsor of the prestigious Commodores' Cup, the leading international amateur regatta. The firm also sponsors sailing events in Scotland and Jersey.
